WORLD STROKE DAY: EVERY MINUTE COUNTS

It takes less than a minute for a stroke to change a life forever, World Stroke Day is
observed annually on October 29 to raise global awareness about stroke prevention,
warning signs, and emergency care which is why the theme for World Stroke Day
reminds us: Every Minute Counts.

In Nigeria, stroke remains a significant public health concern, with research
highlighting its growing burden and the challenges associated with timely treatment.
A systematic review of Nigerian studies found an estimated 26 new stroke cases per
100,000 people annually. These realities underscore the importance of rapid
recognition, prompt medical attention and reliable pre-hospital emergency services.

Alarmingly, stroke is not exclusively an old-age disease, as 33% of all stroke-related
deaths occur in individuals under the age of 70. A stroke can happen to anyone, at
any time, and anywhere. A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when
the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the
brain ruptures, resulting in damage to brain cells due to a lack of oxygen and
essential nutrients. This can affect a person’s ability to speak, move, think, or
perform everyday activities, depending on the part of the brain affected.

A stroke rarely gives a warning as it strikes suddenly and without notice. Because
the onset is so rapid, knowing how to spot the early warning signs can mean the
difference between full recovery and permanent disability. The BE FAST method
provides medically accepted warning signs and symptoms for stroke detection:

  • B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance, dizziness, or trouble walking.
  • E – Eyes: Sudden double vision, blurred vision, or loss of sight.
  • F – Face: One side of the face drooping or an uneven smile when asked to smile.
  • A – Arm: Weakness or numbness that causes one arm to drift downward when
    raised.
  • S – Speech: Slurred, strange speech, or difficulty understanding simple phrases.
  • T – Time: Time to call emergency services immediately if any of these signs are
    present.

If you observe any symptoms from the BE FAST acronym, you must act without
hesitation in order to prevent permanent brain damage or death. Take these
immediate steps:

  • Call Emergency Services Immediately: Dial emergency services right away
  • Note the Time: Pay close attention to when the very first symptom appeared.
  • Do Not Offer Medication or Food: Never give the person aspirin, food, or water.
  • Keep the Person Safe and Comfortable: Help them lie down on their side with their
    head slightly elevated.
  • Perform CPR If Necessary: Monitor their breathing closely; if they lose
consciousness and stop breathing while you wait for the ambulance, begin
    cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) immediately.

Stroke may feel like an unpredictable medical emergency, but the reality is up to
80% of strokes are entirely preventable. By taking these proactive steps, you can
drastically lower your risk:

  • Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet
  • Exercise Regularly
  • Quit Smoking
  • Limit Alcohol Intake
  • Control High Blood Pressure
  • Manage Your Blood Sugar
  • Lower High Cholesterol

World Stroke Day is a vital reminder that while a stroke strikes without warning, we
are not powerless against it. By understanding the staggering global toll, learning to
spot the sudden warning signs, and taking proactive, single-line preventive
measures today, we can actively rewrite the statistics. Share this knowledge, keep
your health in check, and be ready to save a life because when a stroke hits, every
single second counts.
